Jammu, Feb 04 (KNO): The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday informed the Assembly that the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the elevated Metrolite systems proposed for Jammu and Srinagar have been submitted to the Union Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) for appraisal and funding. The government said a final response from the Centre is still awaited. According to the reply tabled in the House, per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the Administrative Council had granted in-principle approval to the proposal on February 13, 2021 (Decision No. 12/3/2021). Following this, DPRs estimating Rs 4,069.48 crore for Jammu and Rs 4,892.51 crore for Srinagar were prepared and forwarded to MoHUA and the Government of India for consideration. "The projects envisage elevated Metrolite corridors for both capital cities," the government said, adding that the DPRs are under examination at the Centre. "A final approval or funding commitment from MoHUA/GoI is still awaited," the reply noted. The government further informed the Assembly that once sanctioned, the Metrolite systems are expected to ease rising traffic congestion, offer a modern mass transit option and support planned urban development in both cities. However, no timeline for commencement or operation was mentioned pending the Centre's decision. The combined project outlay of around Rs 8,962 crore highlights the scale of the proposed systems and the reliance on central funding for their execution, the government added—(KNO)
